Athenry Community Council is a volunteer group dedicated to serving those who live in Athenry. Established in the 1970s, the community council owns and manages a range of properties in the town. These properties—the community hall, Raheen Community Centre, town park, Handball Alley, community creche, and Knockaunglass—were entrusted to the community council to keep for the people of Athenry.
Athenry Community Council’s wish is to keep these properties open and available to local community groups at a low cost. The community council relies on grants and donations to maintain and upgrade the properties.
The council host the annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade, an event that draws a crowd of thousands. The event brings the community together and allows Athenry a chance to put what makes the town great on display through floats, designs, and community groups parading through the town centre.
The goal of Athenry Community Council is to promote and maintain community-centred groups and events. The council is a member of the Galway County Public Participation Network.
If you are interested in starting a community group or local initiative, Athenry Community Council would like to support you anyway they can. Please contact us with any questions you may have.
